Sakon Nakhon Submerged

The northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon has been left in a state of devastation following heavy rain from tropical depression “Sonca” that has left thousands stranded.

Wittaya Chanchalong, the provincial governor, said it’s the worst flooding in 20 years with water levels reaching two meters in some areas.

Rescue workers have been working around the clock supplying those stranded with food and taking others to higher ground or makeshift shelters.

The provincial hospital remains operational although it is under 30cm of water in some parts with patients and medical equipment moved off the ground floor.

The airport was closed due to a flooded runway and is not expected to reopen until Saturday night at the earliest.

The governor said the flooding was caused by torrential rain and runoff from Phu Phan Mountain. It’s expected the situation will improve over the weekend as no more rain is forecast.
