Harold Spiller Drowns Off Koh Phangan

Another two tourists have drowned off the southern islands in Thailand in a month where drowning holidaymakers seems like an almost daily occurrence.

A 47-year-old German, identified as Harold Spiller, drowned on Wednesday afternoon after he went for a swim off Thong Nai Phan beach on Koh Phangan.

Mr Spiller chose to ignore red flags warning beach-goers of high waves and went into the ocean only to get into difficulties as his wife and friends sunbathed on the beach.

When emergency services arrived they found the man unconscious on the beach after being dragged from the water by locals and staff from a nearby bungalow.

He didn’t respond to attempts to resuscitate him and died a short time later.

Thai media also reported the death of a another tourist from drowning yesterday also on Koh Phangan near Sam Bay off Koh Nang Yuan.

The Chinese man, Dong Phan, 34, also decided to go swimming in rough seas and was soon in difficulty as the high waves battered down on him.

He was treated at the scene before being rushed by boat to hospital as rescue volunteers performed CPR but it was to no avail as he didn’t regain consciousness and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities have notified the relevant embassies and the bodies are being kept at Koh Phangnan Hospital awaiting collection by the dead tourists families.
