Bangkok Bus Firms Tell Government

Bangkok’s bus operators are demanding fare increases of up to 33%, saying the extra baht will lead to better service.

About 200 operators planned to meet today with Transport Minister Arkhon Termpittayapaisith to demand he act on a petition they sent earlier and that Arkhon has just sat on.

Bus companies want the fare for non-air conditioned buses to rise 33%, from 9 to 12 baht; and 15% for air-conditioned buses, taking the fare to 15 baht from the current 13 baht.

Bus association President Pattarawadee Klomcharoon said a previous 1-baht increase was not enough to cover the costs of converting diesel coaches to natural gas, and increased costs for depot parking and insurance.

The result has been a lack of maintenance and deteriorating fleet. If the government wants better buses and service, they have to raise fares, Pattarawadee said.
