Expat Boozers Foaming Over New Weaker, Smaller Chang

Thailand’s beer connoisseurs have taken to social media and expat forums this week to thrash ThaiBev, the country’s biggest brewer, for tampering with their beloved Chang

Chang Light, Chang Draught and Chang Export have all been canned, pardon the pun, which was of no interest to anyone.

The problem was ThaiBev putting all their resources and focus into just one product, Chang Classic. Now you’d think that would be good news for Chang lovers but the devil is in the details.

The beverage of choice for many on a budget now comes in a newly designed bottle, with both large and small sizes still available. Out goes the brown glass design and in with green… now this is where it all starts to go wrong.

The beer volume has been reduced from 630ml to 620ml for longnecks and down to 320ml from 330ml in the regular size bottles.

Dirty robbing bastards was the war cry when this dreadful news was announced with some small print saying there would be no change in pricing despite less brew for your baht.

If that wasn’t bad enough, mops were being sold by the truckload at hardware stores for all the puddles of tears as Chang lovers then learned the alcohol content has also been reduced from 6% to 5.5% in a bid to avoid increased taxes.

Well, that piece of news was just too much for some and I’m certain a few of those farrang suicides over the weekend have been Chang related in some way or another.

The news of this weakened, more expensive, new brew was certainly not how the masses wanted to celebrate 20 years of Chang with boycotts aplenty talked about.

ThaiBev shares remained stable throughout the backlash.
