The Leaning Tower Of Phloen Chit

The 159-room Rosewood Bangkok hotel will open in 2019 on Ploenchit Road boasting ultra-luxury, Pool Sky Villas with large terraces and private plunge pools.

The design, inspired by the graceful hand movement of the wai, won Best Futura Project at the MIPIM Asia Awards in 2014 and today Bangkok got a look at the shape of things to come when workers removed protective scaffolding from the structure.

An award winning design may be what’s in the works but all people could see was a building that looked like it was leaning dangerously to the left and photos soon started appearing on Twitter from worried netziens.

An evacuation of the site around the same time – for reasons not confirmed but reported by Thai media to have been due to some falling scaffolding – only added fuel to the fire that something serious was wrong on the building site and social media went wild.

Around the same time, and unbeknownst to me there was unfolding drama on social media, a friend sent me photos of large groups of construction workers on the streets surrounding the building to let me know a breaking story might be brewing to keep an eye on, as many friends, followers and readers do.

I shared the pics stating the high rise construction site had been evacuated and then went for a scan around social media to source details.

The building is fine. No it’s not. The building is fine. No it’s not.

Well, was it okay or was it not? That’s all I wanted to know.

“It’s the design of the building” was another common Tweet that was accompanied with an artists impression of the finished structure. The problem was the image being used only made matters worse.

If you do a Google image search for Rosewood Bangkok the artists impression above is in the top three results, twice in the top ten.

The one below, is the one found on the official web page and many design & architecture websites.

Now that looks more like it. Not two sides of the structure going outwards in opposite directions but both sloping left, just like the uncovered building under construction.

That should and could have been this end of this drama but no. Some suit and someone from the construction company were soon on the scene telling reports all was fine and flashing a phone around with the end design before a scale model appeared.

The photo was of one design, the scale model another.

District officials were soon sent to check all was okay and it was soon confirmed everything was hunky dory and the slopes from the 10th to 33rd floors were the same as the approved designs.

It’s understandable why people panicked not knowing it was some swanky design but this was a PR failure on the part of those behind the construction that could have been easily avoided.
