Magners, Monsoon Rains And The Most Thai Irish Band Ever

My Friday night plan was a simple one, go to Patpong and have a few pints at Shenanigans before taking a wander down Soi 2 to check out a few chrome pole palaces then head home at a decent hour.

As it turned out, I spent more time downing Magners and listening to the most Thai Irish band I’ve ever heard due to the torrential downpour that hit the city just after 10pm.

Me and Mr Mango had been sat out on the Shenanigan’s terrace when it started hammering down and we intended to take shelter in Glamour as there were no empty tables. As I was heading to the cashier to check bin I bumped into the owner and ended up inviting myself to pull up and chair and join him and his mate for a pint as I wasn’t quite ready for a go-go bar.

One pint turned into several which is when we all got talking about the live band playing all the Irish classics, Error 99.

Hailing from Glasgow, I’ve seen my fair share of Irish bands in my time, some good, some mediocre but Error 99 would give every last one of them a run for their money. If you didn’t look at the band and just listen, you’d never guess they were all Thai lads.

We reckoned they didn’t have a clue what they were singing about but boy could they sing and play. Old Celtic classics, a bit of folk and punk from the likes of The Pogues, U2, The Waterboys to “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” and “Molly Malone”.

And the crowd couldn’t get enough as the band kept knocking out foot stompers until the finale just before midnight.

If you fancy checking them out they will be back at Shenanigan’s on Friday 19th October and every second Friday after that.
