Social Media Censorship

Published on 9th June 2018 by Stickboy BKK

Offensive comments come with the territory of running a site like Stickboy with social media reach topping 6 million eyeballs a month and boy do the Facebook fruitloops love to talk trash from the safety of a far away place.

I’m thick skinned and personal attacks are like water off a ducks back but sadly the Computer Crimes Act in Thailand is an ugly beast and so censorship is a must to keep myself clear of trouble.

I’d bet my left leg I’d be held responsible for Clive in Copenhagen’s inappropriate comments on a Facebook post of an aspiring model he’d thought it was big and clever to say looked like a ladyboy.

In the end Clive gets banned, complains and tosses his toys out the pram but what other option do I have?

Leave his offensive remarks public and myself open to prosecution? Of course not. Why would I paint a target on myself?

Social Media Censorship

The truth is people thrive on negativity and controversy, especially when they can hide behind their fake accounts with made up names and profile pics pilfered from Google Images.

Perverse, racist, and vile comments ooze from the fingertips of so many and it becomes a snowball effect.

Negative comments 9 times out of 10 lead to more, and it is quite the opposite with positive feedback. It happens but at around a quarter of the speed at which the Prophets Of Doom emerge to jump on the bash em up bandwagon.

Only this week I shared the photo above showing a message with an equation and a credit card that picked up a few shares. It was clearly a joke and nothing to be taken seriously but a couple of dozen people found a way to turn it into something it wasn’t.

The ban hammer was red hot. And not because the comments would lead to any trouble in Thailand but rather the general negativity.

There are welcoming forums and r/Thailand for the negative Norman’s to hang out and spew their vile with the blessing of mods. These people I’d rather not have around.

So many people these days seem to have nothing better to do with their time other than getting offended and butthurt on behalf of others who didn’t ask for their opinion.

And heaven forbid you reply to these nutters. Oh yeah, it’s fine for them to call you any expletive under the sun and question your mothers fidelity but respond with something sarcastic and they explode like Mount Etna.

They can dish it out but they sure as hell can’t take it back so in the end I generally reply twice and call it a day. I’ve no interest in getting involved in a war of words and name calling with strangers. It’s time consuming and exhausting reading their pathetic responses.

There’s only so many times you can call me an asshole… it gets boring.
